Seeking my peace (piece) of mind in India
Seeking my peace (piece) of mind in India.
After five years of practicing yoga, I realized it was time to take the next step. In February 2017, I decided to attend a 200-hour yoga teacher training program with Turiya Yoga in Goa, India with instructors Manu Akash and Suzana Altero. I was so excited! It was also my first time in wonderful India. However, the first week turned out to be quite stressful. Why? The weather was unbearably hot and humid; the schedule was demanding (early mornings for two-hour Ashtanga classes!); the curriculum was extensive (covering anatomy, philosophy, workshops - you name it!) and on top of it all: I had a family emergency. My entire nervous system went into overdrive. All the fight-or-flight responses, typically reserved for real emergencies, were triggered by mere worry and fear of the unknown - essentially, stress and anxiety. But here's the interesting part: even during that chaotic first week, there was a way to slow down. Engaging in daily Hatha and Ashtanga yoga practice helped me feel more composed and serene. It enabled me to switch off the fight-or-flight reflex and ease into a state of relaxation. With a calmer nervous system, I found myself handling stress much more effectively; remaining composed and collected instead of panicking. Yoga isn't about pushing yourself to the extreme —it’s not about mere body sculpting. The key is to be consciously mindful of the functioning of all eleven body systems collectively. How’s that possible, you wonder? Reconditioning different aspects of the mind through the practice of yoga can lead to the attainment of a peaceful state of mind and a shift towards making health-related decisions more mindfully.
