The power of artificial tears and omega 3

Four years ago, I began experiencing excessive tearing throughout the day. Initially, I thought it might be due to an allergic reaction. As a pharmacist, I tried managing it myself with antihistamine eye drops for a few days, but the symptoms didn’t improve. Realizing this approach wasn’t effective, I decided to consult an ophthalmologist. After a thorough examination, I was diagnosed with dry eye syndrome. My treatment plan included artificial tears, cyclosporine eye drops, and omega-3 supplements.

Interestingly, two of these treatments—artificial tears and omega-3 supplements—are not typically classified as "true medications" by Third-Party Administrators (TPAs) or insurance companies. For this reason, I want to focus this blog on these two components, as they have been instrumental in providing both short-term and long-term relief for my chronic condition.

Research consistently shows that omega-3 fatty acids can significantly alleviate symptoms of Dry Eye Disease (DED), especially when taken in high doses, over an extended period, and with higher EPA levels. Selecting the right omega-3 supplement was critical for me, as I needed to ensure the proper balance of EPA and DHA while avoiding the unpleasant fishy aftertaste. I’m excited to share that I recently discovered a German vegan brand offering a fish-free omega-3 supplement derived from sustainably grown microalgae. This product uses a high-bioavailability Nutrient Transport Concept (NTC) and has no fishy taste, making it a game-changer for me. Additionally, at a recent Gulf insurance conference, one of the key discussions highlighted the importance of insurance companies and TPAs recognizing the value of covering artificial tears for patients with dry eye syndrome. I believe this is a critical step forward, as it underscores how insurance companies assess and address medical necessity. Ensuring access to these treatments can significantly improve the quality of life for those managing chronic conditions like DED. While artificial tears and omega-3 supplements may not be classified as traditional medications, they are indispensable in providing both immediate and sustained relief for patients like me.
